“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul”,It's been a long time since audiences have laid eyes on any "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" movie, and honestly no one expected a fourth one. Now that there's a new film with a completely new ensemble, how does the old cast look like? Why can't they simply reprise their roles?.
The answer to this, of course, is time. The first three films, namely "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days," aired in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively. With so much time in between the last one and the upcoming "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul," they would no longer be fit to personify the roles they once had.
To illustrate, a YouTube video shows exactly how the old cast looked like then and now. Everyone has considerably grown up, and they wouldn't be seen playing the juvenile characters they once were. As a matter of fact, Zachary Gordon, who used to play the lead role of Greg, is no longer a wimpy kid anymore but a strapping young lad.
While the cast rehash is understandable, one cannot deny the fact that the old ensemble had their mark on audiences when it aired, so much that they hold a special place in their hearts. Perhaps the thing that irked people who knew the original films was how the new cast took on the tall order.
The biggest frustration of fans was the replacement to Rodrick, played by Devon Bostick and is now passed to Charlie Wright, J-14 has learned. Netizens showed their outrage by making the hashtag #NotMyRodrick viral on Twitter, followed by #NOTMYHEFFLEYS.
#3 A great release date: June 2, 2017
If there is anything certain from this outpour of emotions, it is that the fourth film will have a hard time convincing moviegoers that it will still be something worth watching. The latest trailer has close to only 3,000 likes and a whopping 20,764 dislikes as of this writing, so this could spell disaster. Jason Zucker has taken over from Zachary Gordon as Gregory Heffley while Charlie Wright follows Devon Bostick as his brother Rodrick Heffley. Greg’s best friend Rowley Jefferson will no longer be played by Robert Capron, with actor Owen Asztalos in his place instead.
Even the actors playing the kids’ parents Susan and Frank Heffley have changed, with Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone joining the cast along with Tom Everett Scott.
As 20th Century Fox released its second and latest trailer for "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul," disgruntled fans of the franchise took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the new actor that was cast to play Rodrick Heffley, Greg's older brother.
The new actor, Charlie Wright, replaced Devon Bostick who played Rodrick in the first three installments of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" since its first movie released in 2010. Wright is known to star in TV series "The Millers" and "Better Things." "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" is his second movie after his role as Chuck in "Ingrid Goes West.
Fans did not welcome Wright's portrayal of Rodrick, starting a Twitter hashtag trend called #NotMyRodrick. Some fans tweet that the replacement "ruined their childhood" and say that he looks more like Willy Wonka, while another also said that he looks like a kid that the actual Rodrick would bully.
